What we have avoided here is what I refer to as the tidal wave. With the tidal wave technique the pine straw is blown back into the bed so fiercely that it begins to pull away from everything behind it and form a sort of worm looking wave that appears to have a substantial drop off behind it giving the impression that not enough straw was used for the job. Always remember to load the line. Mulch on the other hand is a bit different than installing pine straw. On average you as the homeowner can look for a life expectancy of roughly 1 year on your mulch installation before it starts to lose color and decompose. It is at this time it will be very apparent that you need to be freshened up.
